Early Reading & Phonics

Learning to read is one of the most important and exciting journeys our children take — and at our school, it is a journey we take together.

We begin by teaching phonics through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, a clear and structured programme that supports every child to become a confident, fluent reader. Through daily lessons, children learn to recognise sounds, blend words, and build the skills they need to unlock reading.

At the heart of our approach is a strong sense of community. We care about togetherness by reading, sharing stories, and celebrating success as a class. Children practise reading in a supportive environment where they feel safe to try, make mistakes, and grow.

We know that every child learns differently, and we thrive on difference by adapting our teaching to meet individual needs. Through targeted support and carefully matched reading books, we ensure all children can succeed and feel proud of their progress.

Early reading is about more than decoding words — it’s about developing a love of stories. Children enjoy a wide range of high-quality books, helping them become passionate about learningand curious about the world around them.

As their confidence grows, children begin to read with fluency and expression, reflecting on their learning and celebrating how far they’ve come — showing how we are inspired to grow every day.

Above all, we aim to nurture confident, enthusiastic readers who feel connected, capable, and ready to explore the world through books.
