Curious, Confident and Cared For from the Very Start

Every day in the Early Years Foundation Stage at Kingsway Primary School is carefully designed to help children feel safe, confident and excited to learn. Our days are calm, purposeful and full of opportunities for play, exploration and meaningful learning, underpinned by strong relationships and our school values.

A warm and welcoming start

The day begins with friendly greetings from familiar adults. Children are supported to settle quickly, encouraged to come in independently while knowing trusted adults are always close by.

Morning routines are predictable and reassuring, helping children feel secure and ready for learning. These early moments are important for building confidence, independence and belonging.

Learning through play and exploration

Much of the EYFS day is built around purposeful play. Children are free to choose activities across a carefully planned indoor and outdoor environment, exploring areas such as:

  • construction and small world play
  • creative activities and role play
  • sensory and investigation areas
  • early writing, reading and maths resources

Adults join children in their play to model language, ask thoughtful questions and gently move learning forward. Children are encouraged to follow their interests while being supported to develop key skills and knowledge.

Adult‑guided learning

Alongside child‑led play, children take part in short, focused adult‑led sessions. These include:

  • phonics and early reading
  • early maths activities
  • story time and shared talk
  • personal, social and emotional learning

Sessions are lively, interactive and well paced, helping children develop listening skills, confidence and a love of learning.

Building communication and relationships

Communication and language are woven through every part of the day. Children are encouraged to:

  • talk about their ideas and feelings
  • listen to others
  • ask questions
  • use new and ambitious vocabulary

Circle times, stories and group discussions support children to share, take turns and develop positive relationships with peers.

Outdoor learning and physical development

Outdoor learning is a daily part of EYFS life at Kingsway. Children develop physical skills through:

  • climbing, balancing and riding
  • mark‑making and fine motor activities
  • games and movement
  • exploration of the natural environment

These experiences support health, coordination, confidence and readiness for future learning.

Lunchtime and social times

Mealtimes and playtimes are valued as important learning opportunities. Children are supported to:

  • develop independence
  • practice social skills
  • communicate needs
  • build friendships

Adults model positive behaviour and support children to resolve small challenges in a calm, relational way.

A calm, settled end to the day

The day finishes with opportunities to reflect, share stories or enjoy quieter activities. Children are supported to transition calmly, feeling proud of what they have done and ready to return the next day.

A strong transition into Year 1

Throughout the year, EYFS staff carefully prepare children for the move into Key Stage 1 by building:

  • independence and resilience
  • sustained attention
  • confidence in routines
  • early reading, writing and maths skills

By the end of EYFS, children are well prepared academically, socially and emotionally for the next stage of learning.

Working in partnership with families

We believe families are central to children’s success. We work closely with parents and carers to:

  • share learning and progress
  • celebrate achievements
  • support transitions
  • build warm, trusting relationships

A happy start to the Kingsway journey

A day in EYFS at Kingsway Primary and Nursery School is filled with care, curiosity and confidence‑building experiences. Children are nurtured as individuals, supported to grow and inspired to love learning — laying strong foundations for the rest of their school journey.
