How we Promote Reading Across all Subjects
text
At our school, reading is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that strong readers become confident learners, and so we have developed a reading-inspired curriculum where books are used as a powerful tool to drive learning across all subjects.
Wherever possible, each unit of work begins with a high-quality text. These books are carefully chosen to inspire curiosity, introduce new ideas, and provide meaningful context for learning. Whether in History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, or beyond, children are immersed in rich language and engaging narratives that bring learning to life.
We aim to use a book as a stimulus for as many lessons as possible, allowing children to:
- Develop a deeper understanding of each subject through storytelling and information texts
- Build vocabulary naturally within meaningful contexts
- Make connections across subjects and themes
- Engage emotionally and intellectually with their learning
Each theme taught across the school is supported by a range of carefully selected books, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual texts. This ensures that children experience a broad and diverse range of voices, perspectives, and genres.
Our approach reflects our core values:
- We care about togetherness by sharing stories, discussing ideas, and learning collaboratively
- We thrive on difference by exploring diverse texts, cultures, and viewpoints
- We are passionate about learning by engaging with inspiring and meaningful content
- We are inspired to grow by developing our understanding, vocabulary, and love of reading over time
By embedding reading across the curriculum, we ensure that children not only learn to read, but read to learn — becoming confident, curious, and reflective learners who are prepared for the wider world.
