PE & Sport Premium

Our commitment to physical education, health and wellbeing

At Kingsway Primary and Nursery School, we believe that high‑quality physical education, sport and physical activity are essential to pupils’ physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence and personal development.

The PE & Sport Premium funding enables us to strengthen provision, raise standards, improve staff expertise and ensure that all pupils, regardless of background or ability, can participate fully and positively in physical activity.

What is the PE & Sport Premium?

The PE & Sport Premium is government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality and breadth of physical education and sport.

Funding is allocated based on pupil numbers and is intended to:

  • enhance the quality of PE teaching and learning
  • increase participation in physical activity and school sport
  • promote healthy, active lifestyles
  • build sustainable improvements that benefit pupils long‑term

Schools are accountable for how the funding is spent and must publish details of expenditure and impact annually.

How we use the PE & Sport Premium

Leaders at Kingsway use the PE & Sport Premium strategically and evaluatively, ensuring spending is aligned with identified school priorities and pupils’ needs.

Funding is used to:

  • improve the quality of PE teaching through staff training and development
  • enhance curriculum provision with specialist coaching support
  • widen participation in physical activity, particularly for pupils who may be less active
  • increase opportunities for competitive sport and enrichment experiences
  • ensure inclusive provision for pupils with SEND and additional needs

Our approach prioritises high‑quality teaching alongside wider opportunities, ensuring improvements are embedded and sustainable.

Quality of teaching and staff development

In line with national guidance, we recognise that the quality of teaching in PE has the greatest impact on pupil outcomes.

Funding supports:

  • professional development for staff to increase confidence and subject expertise
  • modelling of effective practice by skilled coaches alongside class teachers
  • improved assessment and progression within the PE curriculum

This ensures that staff are increasingly skilled and confident, and that improvements are sustained beyond individual programmes.

Inclusion and access for all pupils

Leaders are committed to ensuring PE and sport is inclusive, equitable and accessible.

Provision is carefully planned to support:

  • pupils with SEND, including those in specialist or resourced provision
  • pupils who may lack confidence or prior experience in sport
  • pupils who may face barriers to participation, including financial or social challenges

Adaptations and targeted support ensure that all pupils can experience success, enjoyment and progress in physical activity.

Participation, enrichment and competition

The PE & Sport Premium supports a wide range of opportunities that promote:

  • increased participation in physical activity
  • enjoyment and positive attitudes towards sport
  • teamwork, resilience and leadership

Pupils benefit from:

  • a broad range of sports and physical activities
  • intra‑school and inter‑school competitions
  • enrichment opportunities that build confidence and motivation

These experiences contribute positively to pupils’ personal development, an important priority within the Ofsted framework.

Impact and evaluation

The impact of PE & Sport Premium spending is carefully monitored and regularly reviewed.

Leaders evaluate impact by:

  • monitoring pupil participation and engagement
  • reviewing curriculum coverage and progression
  • gathering pupil voice and feedback
  • evaluating staff confidence and subject knowledge

This ensures that funding is used effectively and that provision continues to improve over time.

Sustainability and long‑term improvement

A key focus of our approach is sustainability.

Leaders ensure that:

  • staff expertise is developed rather than relying solely on external provision
  • resources and improvements have a lasting impact
  • physical activity and healthy lifestyles are embedded within the wider curriculum

This ensures continued benefit for pupils beyond the year of funding allocation.
