Outdoor Play and Learning
At our school, we believe that play is one of the most important ways children learn, develop and flourish. That is why we are proud to be implementing the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach, transforming our playtimes into rich opportunities for creativity, collaboration, exploration and joyful learning.
Children spend over 1.4 years of their primary education at playtime, making it one of the most significant parts of their school experience. Through OPAL, we are creating an environment where every child can find something they enjoy, take appropriate risks, develop resilience and build lasting friendships.
Our playground is becoming a place where children can build, create, imagine, perform, investigate, invent and problem-solve. Whether they are constructing with loose parts, creating imaginative worlds, performing on stage, digging, reading quietly, designing with chalk or working together on a large-scale project, every playtime offers meaningful opportunities for learning and personal growth.
Living Our School Values Through Play
We Care About Togetherness
Play brings people together. OPAL encourages children of all ages to collaborate, share ideas, solve problems and support one another. Children learn empathy, kindness and cooperation as they negotiate games, include others and celebrate each other's successes. Every child belongs and every child has something valuable to contribute.
We Thrive on Difference
Every child plays differently - and that is something we celebrate. OPAL recognises that there is no single 'right' way to play. Some children love energetic adventures, others prefer imaginative role play, creative art, construction, quiet reading or caring for nature. By offering a wide range of experiences, we ensure every child can find activities that match their interests, strengths and personality while learning to appreciate and respect the choices of others.
We Are Passionate About Learning
Learning doesn't stop when lessons end. Through play, children naturally develop communication, creativity, resilience, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. They learn to assess risks, adapt their ideas, persevere when things don't go to plan and discover new ways of thinking - all while having fun.
We Are Inspired to Grow
OPAL encourages children to challenge themselves, become increasingly independent and develop confidence in their own abilities. Every den built, obstacle overcome, game invented and friendship formed helps children grow socially, emotionally and physically. We believe that children who experience high-quality play become happier, healthier and more confident learners.
Our OPAL Journey
Introducing OPAL is an exciting journey that involves our whole school community. As our outdoor environment continues to evolve, children, staff, parents and carers all play an important role in shaping our play provision. We are continually developing new areas, introducing exciting resources and listening to children's ideas so that our playground reflects their interests and inspires their imaginations.
We are committed to creating a playground where every child feels valued, included and excited to play - a place where laughter is encouraged, curiosity is celebrated and childhood is cherished.
Because at our school, we believe that play isn't a break from learning - it is learning.
