EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS)

At Kingsway Primary School, we are proud to provide a nurturing, inclusive and engaging Early Years environment where every child feels safe, happy and valued. We believe that the early years are a vital stage in a child’s development, and we are committed to giving children the strongest possible start to their learning journey.

We aim to develop children who are:

  • confident, curious and independent learners

  • prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1

At Kingsway, learning is designed to be meaningful, enjoyable and purposeful, ensuring that every child feels a sense of achievement and belonging.

 

Learning through play, exploration and teaching

Children in EYFS learn through a carefully balanced approach that combines:

  • play‑based exploration
  • adult‑guided learning
  • high‑quality interactions and teaching

Our curriculum is built around exciting topics inspired by stories, high‑quality texts and real‑life experiences, helping children make meaningful connections in their learning.

Children have daily opportunities to learn both indoors and outdoors, supporting their physical development, creativity and curiosity.

 

A strong focus on the prime areas of learning

We prioritise the key foundations of learning as set out in the EYFS Framework:

  • Communication and Language
    Children develop strong speaking and listening skills through storytelling, discussion and rich language experiences.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
    Children build relationships, develop confidence and learn how to manage feelings and behaviour.
  • Physical Development
    Through active play and structured activities, children develop coordination, strength and fine motor skills.

Building early knowledge and skills

Alongside the prime areas, children are supported to develop strong foundations in:

  • Early Reading and Phonics
    Through the Little Wandle phonics programme, children begin to learn to read with confidence and enjoyment.
  • Early Writing
    Children develop mark‑making, letter formation and early writing skills in meaningful contexts.
  • Mathematics
    Children build early number sense, pattern recognition and problem‑solving skills through practical experiences.
  • Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design
    Children explore their environment, develop curiosity about the world and express themselves creatively.

 

A relational and inclusive approach

At Kingsway, relationships are at the heart of our EYFS provision.

Our staff:

  • get to know each child as an individual
  • build strong, trusting relationships
  • carefully observe learning and development
  • plan next steps based on children’s needs and interests

Through our Inclusive Quality First Teaching (iQFT) approach, we ensure that:

  • learning is accessible to all children
  • support is provided early and responsively
  • every child can participate, succeed and feel included

We celebrate difference and ensure that all children feel seen, heard and valued.

 

Supporting independence, confidence and resilience

Children are encouraged to:

  • explore and make choices
  • take risks in their learning
  • develop independence in daily routines
  • persevere when faced with challenges

We support children to understand that:

mistakes are part of learning and growth.

 

Assessment and progress

Children’s development is carefully monitored through:

  • ongoing observation
  • interaction and discussion
  • assessment of learning over time

This allows staff to:

  • identify next steps
  • provide targeted support where needed
  • ensure all children make strong progress

By the end of Reception, children at Kingsway are:

  • confident communicators
  • able to work cooperatively with others
  • developing independence and resilience
  • beginning to read simple sentences
  • starting to write independently
  • showing secure early number understanding

We know that strong home‑school relationships make a real difference.
