Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

At Kingsway Primary School, we are committed to nurturing children who are thoughtful, respectful, confident and prepared for life in modern Britain. The promotion of British Values and the celebration of difference and diversity are woven through our curriculum, ethos and daily life of the school.

Our approach to Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development ensures pupils develop the values, knowledge and understanding they need to thrive as individuals and as members of local, national and global communities.

This work is closely aligned with our school values, which underpin everything we do and reflect our belief that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, included and experience a real sense of belonging.

Our values and ethos

At Kingsway, we believe that for children to flourish academically and personally, they must:

  • feel happy, secure and valued
  • have their individuality respected
  • see their differences recognised and celebrated
  • feel understood and supported through challenge
  • have their interests extended
  • have their strengths, talents and achievements nurtured

These principles directly support the development of British Values and sit at the heart of our relational, inclusive and child‑centred ethos.

SMSC at Kingsway

The development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding runs alongside academic learning, enabling children to:

  • develop their own values and beliefs
  • build self‑awareness and emotional understanding
  • understand expectations of behaviour and responsibility
  • show empathy, kindness and respect for others
  • understand their place within local and wider society
  • appreciate diversity and difference

This work supports pupils’ personal development and promotes our commitment to ensuring that all children feel part of the Kingsway family.

Promoting British Values

In line with statutory guidance, Kingsway actively promotes the fundamental British Values of:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

These values are embedded through our curriculum, assemblies, daily interactions and wider school life.

Spiritual Development

Pupils are supported to develop spiritually through opportunities to:

  • reflect, question and explore meaning through RE, assemblies and the wider curriculum
  • learn about themselves, others and the world around them
  • engage with music, art, stories and creative expression
  • develop empathy, imagination and a sense of curiosity
  • take part in charitable activities and acts of service to others
  • appreciate the natural world and moments of awe and wonder

Assemblies play an important role in this, providing regular opportunities for reflection, discussion and shared values.

Moral Development

Kingsway provides a strong moral framework, supported by:

  • a clear and consistently applied Behaviour Policy
  • an emphasis on positive relationships and restorative approaches
  • opportunities to reflect on right and wrong through discussion, stories and real‑life scenarios
  • recognition and celebration of positive behaviour and choices
  • curriculum opportunities to explore fairness, justice and equality

Pupils are supported to understand the consequences of actions, take responsibility and develop a strong sense of right and wrong.

Social Development

Pupils are encouraged to develop strong social skills through:

  • collaborative learning and structured talk
  • working respectfully with others across the curriculum
  • opportunities to take on roles of responsibility
  • participation in school and community activities

Democracy is experienced in practical ways, such as:

  • voting and representation through pupil voice and school councils
  • class discussions where opinions are valued and listened to

These experiences help pupils learn about cooperation, leadership and shared responsibility.

Cultural Development and Thriving on Difference

At Kingsway, we are proud to serve a diverse community. We actively promote a culture where difference is valued and inclusion is a lived experience, not an abstract idea.

Pupils are supported to:

  • learn about their own heritage and that of others
  • explore different cultures, traditions and beliefs through the curriculum
  • develop respect and understanding for people from backgrounds different from their own
  • celebrate diversity through events, assemblies and learning opportunities

We believe that helping children to thrive in a diverse society prepares them well for life beyond primary school.

Assemblies and planned provision

Our planned assembly programme plays a key role in promoting:

  • British Values
  • mutual respect and tolerance
  • equality and fairness
  • celebration of difference

Assemblies are carefully structured to build understanding progressively and to connect learning with real‑life experiences and current events, reinforcing key messages across the school year.

Assemblies Overview

Preparing pupils for life in modern Britain

Through our curriculum, values, assemblies and daily practice, pupils at Kingsway learn to:

  • respect the rule of law and understand why laws exist
  • express their views respectfully and listen to others
  • appreciate diversity and challenge prejudice
  • understand shared values while celebrating difference

This ensures that pupils leave Kingsway as confident, respectful and socially responsible individuals, well‑prepared for the next stage of their education and for life in modern Britain.
