At Kingsway Primary School, we are committed to developing confident, resilient and independent mathematicians. Our mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced through the White Rose mastery approach, ensuring that all pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.
We believe that all children can succeed in maths. Through high-quality teaching, rich questioning and carefully structured learning, pupils move from concrete experiences, to pictorial representations, and finally to abstract understanding. This approach enables children to build strong conceptual knowledge rather than relying on memorised procedures.
Collaboration is central to our maths lessons. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, explore different strategies and learn from one another. This develops confidence, resilience and a deeper understanding of mathematics.
We place a strong emphasis on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, ensuring that pupils can apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. Mistakes are valued as an important part of the learning process, helping children to develop a growth mindset and a positive attitude towards challenge.
By the end of their time at Kingsway, pupils leave as confident mathematicians who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and able to apply their learning to the wider world.
Building Confidence, Curiosity and Mathematical Thinking
At Kingsway Primary School, mathematics is a vital part of our curriculum and plays an essential role in developing children’s confidence, reasoning skills and problem‑solving abilities. We believe that all children can be successful mathematicians when teaching is carefully structured, adaptive and rooted in strong conceptual understanding.
Our approach to mathematics reflects our core values: We Care about Togetherness, We Thrive on Difference, We are Passionate about Learning and We are Inspired to Grow. These values underpin how maths is taught, learned and experienced across the school.
Our approach to teaching maths
At Kingsway, mathematics teaching is delivered through high‑quality, inclusive classroom practice as part of our Inclusive Quality First Teaching (iQFT) approach. Lessons are designed to ensure that all children can access, engage with and succeed in learning at the point of teaching.
We follow the White Rose Maths programme as the basis for our curriculum design. This provides:
- a clear, progressive structure from Nursery through to Year 6
- a strong focus on depth of understanding rather than speed
- carefully sequenced small steps to support learning over time
- regular opportunities for reasoning and problem solving
This ensures that learning is coherent, cumulative and ambitious.
Developing understanding, not just answers
At Kingsway, we prioritise mathematical understanding. Children are encouraged to:
- explore concepts using concrete resources and visual representations
- explain their thinking using mathematical language
- reason about numbers and relationships
- apply their learning to unfamiliar problems
Children learn that making mistakes is part of learning, and confidence grows through discussion, exploration and practice.
An inclusive and adaptive maths curriculum
We recognise that children learn mathematics in different ways and at different rates. Teaching is adapted to meet individual needs through:
- clear modelling and explanation
- flexible support within lessons
- use of visual representations and practical resources
- scaffolded tasks that support independence
- digital technology where appropriate to support access
Support is provided within lessons wherever possible, ensuring children remain part of their class learning community while developing confidence and resilience.
High expectations for all learners
At Kingsway, high expectations apply to every child. This includes pupils who:
- need additional support
- are developing confidence in maths
- have SEND or are learning English as an additional language
Children are supported to keep up, not catch up, through responsive teaching and careful sequencing of learning. Challenge is provided through depth, reasoning and application, rather than acceleration alone.
Maths across school life
Mathematics at Kingsway is not just about lessons. Children are supported to:
- develop positive attitudes towards maths
- see maths as relevant and meaningful
- use mathematical thinking in real‑life contexts
- build confidence and independence as learners
This helps children to leave Kingsway equipped with both the knowledge and the mindset needed for future learning.
Our commitment
At Kingsway Primary School, we are committed to:
- high‑quality mathematics teaching for all
- inclusive, adaptive classroom practice
- developing confident, curious mathematicians
- building strong foundations for future success
Through a structured, supportive and ambitious maths curriculum, we aim to inspire children to enjoy learning mathematics and believe in their own potential.
