What is the Kingsway School Parliament?

The Kingsway School Parliament is a group of democratically elected class representatives from across the school who work together to:

  • represent the views and experiences of their classmates
  • act as spokespeople for their peers
  • contribute to discussions about school priorities
  • work alongside the Senior Leadership Team on school improvement

Every class has a representative, ensuring wide and balanced representation across the school.

A strong focus on diversity, representation and inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are core principles of School Parliament at Kingsway.

We are committed to ensuring that:

  • children from all backgrounds and experiences are represented
  • disadvantaged pupil groups have a clear and valued voice
  • different perspectives are actively sought and respected

School Parliament reflects the rich diversity of our school community, and membership includes children from a range of pupil groups, including those who may face barriers to participation or representation.

This ensures that decisions and priorities reflect the needs and experiences of all children, not just a few.

Learning about democracy in action

Children at Kingsway do not just learn about democracy – they experience it.

School Parliament representatives are elected through a class vote, helping pupils understand:

  • fairness, choice and equality
  • how voting works
  • responsibility and accountability
  • respecting the views of others

This practical, real‑life experience helps children develop an age‑appropriate understanding of democracy and citizenship.

The role of School Parliament representatives

School Parliament members:

  • gather ideas, views and concerns from their classmates
  • speak on behalf of others, not just themselves
  • discuss inclusion, wellbeing, safety and learning
  • help shape school improvement priorities
  • feedback outcomes and decisions to their classes

Representatives are supported to listen carefully, communicate respectfully and consider the needs of different groups within school.

Working alongside school leaders

The School Parliament works closely with the Senior Leadership Team, ensuring that:

  • children’s voices inform decision‑making
  • diversity and inclusion are considered in school improvement
  • leadership decisions are grounded in pupils’ lived experiences

This collaborative approach helps leaders ensure that school development remains child‑centred, inclusive and meaningful.

A values‑led approach

The School Parliament brings Kingsway’s core values to life:

  • We Care about Togetherness
Children work collaboratively, representing and supporting one another.
  • We Thrive on Difference
A range of voices, experiences and perspectives are welcomed and valued.
  • We are Passionate about Learning
Pupils contribute ideas to improve learning and school life.
  • We are Inspired to Grow
Children develop confidence, leadership skills and a sense of responsibility.

Leadership of School Parliament

The Kingsway School Parliament is led by Miss Dunstan, who:

  • supports children to prepare for meetings
  • helps pupils develop confidence as representatives
  • ensures all voices are heard, particularly those from disadvantaged or under‑represented groups
  • supports children to understand the impact of their contributions

This ensures School Parliament is inclusive, purposeful and empowering.

Developing leadership and citizenship further

Children’s understanding of democracy and citizenship continues to develop beyond School Parliament.

In Year 6, pupils have further opportunities to:

  • stand for elected pupil leadership roles
  • take on whole‑school responsibilities
  • act as role models for younger children

These experiences deepen children’s understanding of leadership, responsibility and participation in a community.

Why School Parliament matters

Through School Parliament, children at Kingsway:

  • feel represented and valued
  • learn that their voices matter
  • understand fairness, equality and inclusion
  • develop confidence and communication skills
  • see how they can influence positive change

This supports children’s personal development and prepares them to be active, respectful citizens.

Our commitment

At Kingsway Primary School, we are committed to:

  • inclusive and representative pupil voice
  • ensuring disadvantaged pupils are heard
  • teaching democracy through real experience
  • embedding children’s views in school improvement
  • developing confident, compassionate leaders of the future

The Kingsway School Parliament reflects our belief in learning with children, not simply for them.
