Early Identification and Early Help at Kingsway Primary School
Recognising Needs Early, Supporting Children Together
At Kingsway Primary School, we believe that the earlier a child receives the right support, the greater the impact on their confidence, wellbeing and success. Early identification and early help are central to our inclusive approach and reflect our commitment to ensuring every child feels safe, supported and able to thrive.
Our work is rooted in our values:
We Care about Togetherness, We Thrive on Difference, We Are Passionate about Learning and We Are Inspired to Grow.
Our approach to early identification
At Kingsway, we do not wait for difficulties to become barriers. We:
- notice changes early through daily interactions and strong relationships
- use ongoing assessment and observation to understand children’s needs
- listen carefully to children and families
- respond quickly with supportive, proportionate adjustments
Because our staff know children well, we are able to identify when something may be affecting:
- learning
- communication
- wellbeing or emotional regulation
- attendance or engagement
Early identification is not about labelling children — it is about understanding and responding to need.
A relational approach to support
Support at Kingsway is built on strong relationships and trust.
We work closely with:
- children
- parents and carers
- staff across the school
to ensure that support is:
- personalised
- respectful
- collaborative
- responsive over time
Parents are seen as partners, and we will always involve you in conversations about your child’s needs and next steps.
What happens if a concern is identified?
If a child may need additional support, we follow a graduated approach, in line with the SEND Code of Practice.
This means we:
- Assess – understand the child’s strengths and needs
- Plan – agree strategies and support
- Do – implement support within the classroom
- Review – reflect on progress and adjust support
Most children’s needs are supported through high quality inclusive classroom teaching (iQFT), without the need for formal plans or labels.
Early help for children and families
Sometimes children or families may benefit from additional support beyond the classroom.
As part of our early help approach, we:
- work with families to understand wider needs
- provide pastoral and family support
- liaise with Trafford services where appropriate
- coordinate support so families do not need to navigate services alone
We may work with a range of services such as:
- Trafford Team Together
- School Nursing
- Educational Psychology
- Speech and Language Therapy
- CAMHS
- Social Care and Early Help teams
Support is always agreed with families and focused on achieving the best outcomes for the child.
Working with Trafford services and the Local Offer
Kingsway follows Trafford Local Authority guidance, ensuring that:
- support is provided early and proportionately
- children’s needs are met within mainstream provision wherever possible
- families are informed and supported at every stage
The Trafford Local Offer provides information about services available for children and young people with additional needs:

Inclusive Quality First Teaching (iQFT)
At Kingsway, the most important support happens in the classroom.
Through iQFT, teaching is:
- adaptive and responsive
- carefully scaffolded
- supported by enabling environments
- designed to remove barriers early
This ensures children can:
- access learning alongside their peers
- build confidence and independence
- feel included and valued
Additional support is only introduced where it adds value.
Supporting wellbeing and belonging
We understand that children’s learning is closely linked to their wellbeing.
Our early help approach includes:
- strong pastoral support
- trusted adult relationships
- calm, predictable environments
- support for emotional regulation and resilience
Children are encouraged to talk, ask for help and feel confident that adults will listen.
Our commitment to families
At Kingsway:
- no concern is ever too small
- support is provided early, not delayed
- families are listened to and respected
- we work with you, not separately from you
We believe the best outcomes happen when school and families work together.
Who can I speak to?
