What should I do if I have a concern?

Working Together to Keep Children Safe, Supported and Thriving

At Kingsway Primary School, relationships, trust and communication are at the heart of everything we do. We know that concerns can arise at times, and we want parents and carers to feel confident, supported and clear about what to do.

Whether your concern is about:

  • learning or progress
  • behaviour or friendships
  • wellbeing or mental health
  • attendance or routines
  • inclusion or SEND
  • safeguarding

We want to hear from you early.

Our approach to concerns at Kingsway

We are committed to:

  • listening carefully and respectfully
  • responding promptly and professionally
  • working in partnership with families
  • acting early to prevent concerns escalating
  • putting children’s welfare first at all times

Most concerns can be resolved quickly and positively through early conversation.

Step 1: Start by speaking to your child’s class teacher

For most concerns, the class teacher should be your first point of contact.

Class teachers:

  • know your child best in school
  • see them learning and socialising daily
  • can explain what is happening and why
  • can make immediate adjustments or next steps

Concerns may include:

  • learning or understanding
  • confidence or engagement
  • behaviour or friendships
  • classroom routines or expectations

Teachers will listen and work with you to support your child.

Step 2: If further support is needed

If a concern continues or requires additional support, the class teacher may involve other members of staff, such as:

  • a year group or phase leader
  • the Pastoral Lead
  • the SEND/Inclusion Team

This ensures concerns are explored thoroughly and support is coordinated appropriately.

Wellbeing, behaviour, attendance or emotional concerns

If your concern relates to:

  • emotional wellbeing or mental health
  • anxiety, regulation or friendship difficulties
  • attendance or reluctance to come to school
  • changes at home that may affect your child

You can also speak to:

  • Miss Dunstan – Pastoral Lead

The pastoral team works closely with families using a relational, early‑help approach, supporting children before worries become bigger challenges.

SEND or inclusion concerns

If you have concerns about:

  • special educational needs or disabilities (SEND)
  • learning differences or barriers
  • support being provided for your child

Please speak to:

  • your child’s class teacher initially
  • then the SEND/Inclusion Team if needed

Parents are involved at every stage, and concerns are addressed through a graduated, supportive process.

Safeguarding concerns – when you are worried about safety

If your concern relates to:

  • a child’s safety
  • welfare or protection
  • worries about harm, risk or neglect

Please speak immediately to a member of the school’s Designated Safeguarding Team.

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

  • Miss Kate Baskeyfield – Headteacher

Deputy / DSL‑trained staff

  • Bethany Jones – Deputy DSL
  • Miss Dunstan – Pastoral Lead (DSL trained)

All concerns are taken seriously and acted upon in line with statutory requirements.

If your concern is urgent

If you believe a child is at immediate risk of harm:

  • contact the school immediately, or

  • contact Trafford First Response: 0161 912 5125

In an emergency, contact 999.

What happens after a concern is shared?

When you raise a concern, we will:

  • listen carefully and respectfully
  • gather relevant information
  • act in the child’s best interests
  • keep appropriate records
  • decide next steps proportionately

Wherever possible, we will involve parents in discussions, unless doing so would place a child at further risk.

Confidentiality and records

Concerns are handled:

  • sensitively and professionally
  • with respect to confidentiality
  • in line with data protection and safeguarding guidance

Information is shared only with those who need to know to support or safeguard a child.

If you remain concerned

If you feel a concern has not been resolved:

  • speak to a member of the Senior Leadership Team
  • follow the school’s Complaints Procedure, available on the website

We are always willing to listen and review concerns carefully.

A shared responsibility

Keeping children safe, happy and able to learn is a shared responsibility between school and families.

We value:

  • open communication
  • mutual trust
  • early conversations
  • respectful partnership

No concern is too small

No question is unwelcome

Our commitment to families

At Kingsway Primary School, we are committed to:

  • creating a culture where concerns are listened to
  • responding with care, clarity and professionalism
  • working relationally with families
  • ensuring children feel safe, supported and valued
