At Kingsway Primary School, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of music in all pupils. Our music curriculum is engaging, inclusive and carefully sequenced to ensure that every child develops confidence as a performer, composer and listener.

Through high-quality, practical lessons, pupils explore a wide range of musical styles, genres and cultures. They are given regular opportunities to sing, play instruments, compose and perform, developing both their musical skills and their creativity.

We believe that all children can succeed in music. Lessons are designed to support pupils in building their understanding step by step, allowing them to develop confidence and enjoyment as they progress. Collaboration is an important part of our music provision, with pupils working together to create and refine musical ideas.

We place a strong emphasis on developing key musical skills in performing, composing, listening and appraising, alongside an understanding of musical notation. Pupils revisit and build on these skills over time, enabling them to deepen their understanding and make meaningful connections in their learning.

By the end of their time at Kingsway, pupils will have developed a broad appreciation of music, confidence in performance, and the skills needed to continue their musical journey at secondary school and beyond.

Creativity, Expression and Belonging Through Music

At Kingsway Primary and Nursery School, music plays an important role in supporting children’s creativity, self‑expression and personal development. We believe that music provides every child with opportunities to explore their identity, express emotions, collaborate with others and experience success.

Our music provision reflects our core values: We Care about Togetherness, We Thrive on Difference, We are Passionate about Learning and We are Inspired to Grow. Through music, children learn to listen, appreciate difference, work together and build confidence in a supportive environment.

Specialist music teaching

Music at Kingsway is delivered by a specialist music teacher through our partnership with PPA Cover Ltd. This ensures that children benefit from:

  • expert subject knowledge
  • engaging, high‑quality music lessons
  • a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum
  • opportunities to develop musical skills over time

Specialist teaching allows children to experience music as a practical, active and enjoyable subject, while ensuring national curriculum requirements are met.

Our music curriculum

The music curriculum is designed to develop children’s ability to:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
  • explore rhythm, melody and pitch
  • use their voices and a range of instruments
  • compose and create their own musical ideas
  • understand and appreciate music from different cultures and traditions

Learning builds progressively across year groups, allowing children to revisit and deepen skills, knowledge and understanding in line with statutory guidance.

A values‑led, inclusive approach

Music lessons at Kingsway are inclusive by design. Teaching reflects our Inclusive Quality First Teaching (iQFT) approach, ensuring all children can access and enjoy music regardless of starting point, confidence or experience.

Lessons:

  • are active and practical
  • encourage participation and collaboration
  • value effort, creativity and individuality
  • build confidence through positive experiences

Music provides a space where children can succeed in different ways, strengthening self‑esteem and belonging.

Working together through music

Music supports one of Kingsway’s most important values — Togetherness.

Through singing, performing and composing together, children learn to:

  • listen to others
  • work as a group
  • respect different contributions
  • develop shared responsibility

These skills transfer beyond the music classroom and support children’s broader social and emotional development.

Music beyond the classroom

Alongside curriculum lessons, music contributes to the wider life of the school, helping children to:

  • experience performance opportunities
  • celebrate achievements
  • participate in shared events and assemblies
  • develop confidence when performing for others

Music is used to bring our school community together and enrich children’s experience of school life.

Our commitment

At Kingsway Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to:

  • providing high‑quality, specialist‑led music teaching
  • ensuring inclusive access for all children
  • fostering creativity, confidence and collaboration
  • helping children develop a lifelong appreciation of music

Through our music curriculum, we aim to inspire children to explore their creativity, express themselves confidently and experience the joy of making music together.
