Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
A Nurturing Start Where Every Child Can Thrive
At Kingsway Primary School, we believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a vital and special time in a child’s development. Our EYFS provision is designed to give every child the strongest possible start through a nurturing, inclusive and engaging environment where children feel safe, valued and excited to learn.
From the moment children join our Nursery or Reception, we focus on building strong, trusting relationships, recognising that secure attachments are the foundation for confidence, curiosity and success.
A values‑led and relational approach
Our EYFS provision is firmly rooted in Kingsway’s core values:
- We Care about Togetherness – building positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging
- We Thrive on Difference – celebrating every child’s individuality, background and strengths
- We are Passionate about Learning – fostering curiosity, enthusiasm and a love of learning
- We are Inspired to Grow – nurturing resilience, independence and confidence
These values are woven through daily practice, supporting children’s personal, social and emotional development alongside their learning.
Learning through play, exploration and guidance
Children in EYFS learn best through a careful balance of:
- child‑initiated play and exploration, and
- adult‑guided teaching that introduces new skills and concepts in meaningful ways
Our carefully planned curriculum is rich, engaging and knowledge‑informed, supported by high‑quality texts, hands‑on experiences and purposeful provocations. Learning is organised around themes that are relevant, inclusive and responsive to children’s interests.
A strong focus on communication, wellbeing and foundations for learning
We prioritise the prime areas of learning, ensuring children develop:
- strong communication and language skills through high‑quality talk, stories and vocabulary
- confidence, independence and positive relationships
- physical development to support health, coordination and early writing
Alongside this, children build firm foundations in early reading, writing and mathematics, preparing them confidently for the transition into Year 1.
Inclusive and supportive for every child
At Kingsway, we celebrate that every child develops at their own pace. Our EYFS provision is inclusive by design and supports all learners through:
- enabling, well‑organised indoor and outdoor environments
- ongoing observation and responsive planning
- adaptive teaching and targeted support where needed
- close partnership with families and, where appropriate, external professionals
Children are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes and persevere, building resilience and independence in a gentle, supportive way.
Preparing children for the next stage
By the end of EYFS, children at Kingsway are confident, independent learners who:
- can communicate effectively and collaborate with others
- show curiosity, resilience and enthusiasm for learning
- are well prepared for the transition into Key Stage 1
They leave EYFS not only with key skills and knowledge, but with a strong sense of belonging, self‑belief and readiness to grow.
Working in partnership with families
We understand that families play a vital role in children’s early development. We work closely with parents and carers to:
- support smooth transitions into Nursery and Reception
- share learning, progress and next steps
- build trusting, supportive relationships
Together, we ensure every child feels happy, secure and confident in school.
A welcoming start to the Kingsway journey
At Kingsway Primary and Nursery School, our EYFS is a warm, nurturing and exciting place to learn. We pride ourselves on creating a calm, inclusive environment where children are encouraged to explore, discover and flourish — laying the foundations for a happy and successful school journey.
